Your placement fee is paid only when you are matched with an au pair and when your employment contract is signed. We offer two placement fee options to ensure your needs can be met:
- Placement fee: $1575.00 plus tax. The placement fee covers the cost of registering, applying and being matched with an au pair. It also includes an orientation for your au pair and check-ins with you and your au pair. It also comes with a 12-week replacement.
- Placement fee plus payroll*: $2,400.00 plus tax. This fee includes everything above, plus registration with CRA & WCB, personalized calculations for tax, CPP, EI amounts, integration of room and board and other taxable benefits for a 12 month period, preparing and filing the T4 slip & summary, completing ROEs, remitting to the CRA, online paystubs and direct deposit to your employee.
*At this time we cannot provide payroll service to clients in Quebec.
Au Pair Classic vs. Au Pair Plus
Families can choose to either have an au pair classic or au pair plus. Au Pair Classic applicants have a minimum of 200 hours of childcare experience. Our Au Pair Plus applicants have formal qualification in a child care related profession (e.g. educator, paediatric nurse, child care assistant, midwife, etc.) or have worked with children full time for 2 years. Thus, they have not only gain theoretical knowledge, but also skills in working with children.
Families will be notified of Au Pair Plus program applicants when applications are sent out.
Au Pair in the Au Pair Plus program are paid an additional $1 per hour.
Au Pair Wages
Au Pair Compensation & Family Responsibilities
Au pairs in Canada are paid at least minimum wage, with deductions for room and board. Both the wage rate and the deduction amount are determined by the province. As of now, minimum wages across Canada range from $15.00 to $17.85 per hour.
An au pair’s total compensation depends on the number of hours they work per week. Below is a breakdown of estimated costs for host families, which includes vacation pay and mandatory CRA remittances:
| Hours Per Week | Au Pair Classic | Au Pair Plus |
|---|---|---|
| 25 | $370.00 | $407.00 |
| 30 | $462.00 | $506.00 |
| 35 | $555.00 | $605.00 |
| 40 | $649.00 | $703.00 |
Note: these amounts are the average amount between Quebec, Ontario, Alberta and British Columbia, therefore your au pair’s wages may be more or less than these amounts
In addition to wages, host families are responsible for several other costs, including:
- Car insurance (if the au pair will be driving)
- Workers’ compensation insurance
- Furnishing & preparing the au pair’s bedroom
- Cell phone costs (if the au pair is expected to use a phone for work-related communication, families should cover a portion of this expense)
To recognize the au pair’s commitment, completion bonuses are awarded at the end of their contract:
- $350 for a 6–9 month placement
- $600 for a 10–12 month placement
Note: While au pairs can work more than 40 hours per week, it’s important to check your provincial employment standards for overtime regulations to ensure they are compensated fairly.
