The Right Fit for Your Family
The daily demands of modern parenting can leave little time to truly enjoy being at home. Between school drop-offs, activities, work, caring for aging parents, and getting dinner on the table, many parents are simply stretched thin. It’s hard to catch your breath—let alone be fully present for your kids at the end of a long day.
An au pair can help lighten that load, offering reliable support and allowing you to show up for your family in a way that feels more like you.
Au pairs are enthusiastic young adults with varying levels of childcare experience, eager to share their culture while immersing themselves in Canadian family life. Hosting an au pair is a collaborative experience—parents should be ready to work together with their au pair to create a routine that fits everyone’s needs, and provide guidance and training along the way.
Host Family Eligibility
Any family in need of childcare and looking to create a better balance between work and home life can be a host family. Families come in all forms—what matters most is a genuine interest in cultural exchange and the willingness to welcome a young adult into your home.
To host an au pair, families must:
- Be open to having a live-in caregiver and ready to share their culture and daily life.
- Offer between 25 and 44 hours of childcare support per week, depending on the family’s needs and the au pair’s schedule.
- Comply with applicable provincial Employment Standards, recognizing that while the relationship includes an employment aspect, it also goes beyond that.
Hosting an au pair is a unique blend of professional and personal—it’s about building mutual respect, trust, and connection in a home environment where everyone feels valued.
How Can an Au Pair Support Your Family?
An au pair offers so much more than just childcare—they bring flexibility, energy, and an extra set of hands to your daily routine. Because they live in your home, their schedule can be tailored around your family’s unique needs, making them an especially valuable support for parents with unpredictable or non-traditional work hours.
Here are just some of the ways an au pair can help:
- School drop-offs and pick-ups – Many of our au pairs have valid driver’s licenses and can help manage the school run.
- Meal prep – From snacks to simple meals, they can help keep everyone fed and happy.
- Grocery shopping – Light errands like picking up groceries can take one more thing off your plate.
- Children’s laundry – Helping stay on top of the never-ending pile!
- Bedtime routines – Bath, books, and bed—plus, a date night for you!
- Homework help – Supporting school-aged kids with their assignments and study habits.
- Activities & sports – Making sure kids get to practices and extracurriculars on time.
- Childcare – Most importantly, your au pair provides warm, personalized 1:1 care with a focus on connection, consistency, and fun.
While au pairs may assist with light household duties related to the children, it’s important to remember they are not housekeepers. Any additional, non-childcare tasks should be clearly discussed in advance and agreed upon by both the family and the au pair.
